About Us
The first Line Society – 1950 and all that!
In early 1950 members of the Bradford Railway Circle got together and started a correspondence group discussing the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway.
They placed an advertisement in the March 1950 issue of the Model Railway Constructor inviting like minded individuals to join. By 1956 a regular Newsletter was in production and its first editor, Tom Wray, was at the helm.
Since that date membership has grown steadily and we now have over 900 UK and international members.
What we offer today
The Society aims to bring together all those with an interest in the ‘Lanky’ whether it be in historical research or railway modelling.
We have a series of regular publications which we believe are the best of any line society. Go to the Publications page to find out more.
We also have a growing range of superb books, details of which you can find on the Books page of our On-Line Shop.
We have a large collections of documents, photographs and drawings many of which have been digitised and made available for research purposes. Go to the Virtual Museum section to see what’s available.
Our place in the modern railway
As well as producing great publications the Society is recognised as a serious stakeholder in both the modern and heritage railway sectors and is often consulted on issues of conservation and preservation.
Our Purpose
The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Society is devoted to the dissemination of information about the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway throughout its 75 years of existence and beyond.
The Society has established an ongoing permanent record of its findings through its publications, which are widely available from the website, exhibition stands and specialist booksellers.
It works closely with the National Railway Museum, Manchester Archives and other relevant bodies to ensure that original documents, photographs, drawings and other materials are professionally preserved and made available to all.
Charitable Status
The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Society became Registered Charity No.1098492 in 2003.
