Accident Reports

Introduction
Improvements in railway safety have generally been the result of lessons learnt from accidents. The Board of Trade was responsible for accident investigation and employed officers from the Royal Engineers. One notable feature was the speed with which the investigations were completed and reports produced - in stark contrast to today! In the list below the period from 1899 to 1921 includes all the serious accidents that occurred during that period. Prior to 1899 the list is incomplete.

The links below are in date order and will open a pdf copy of the final report.

Notes

Railway accidents were not uncommon in the pre-grouping era and the Lancashire & Yorkshire was a busy, congested system. It operated around 4,500 carriages and 30,000 goods wagons on its 600 route miles, all controlled by 733 signal boxes and groundframes.
